Description

Tignanello

It was the first Sangiovese to be aged in barriques, the first modern red wine made from non-traditional grape varieties (including Cabernet), and one of the first Chianti red wines without the addition of white grape varieties. Tignanello is a milestone in wine history. The wine is made from a selection of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc grapes.

The drawing

The label was designed by Silvio Coppola in 1974, when the 1971 vintage was released. Coppola's name came up in 1973 during a dinner at Castello della Sala. A graphic artist and designer, famous for his minimalist lamps, austere furniture, and also for the cover designs of numerous books published by Feltrinelli, Coppola was the perfect choice for this project.

The signature

Marchese Piero Antinori, currently honorary president, decided to have the Tignanello label signed by his father Niccolò Antinori as a sign of gratitude for the trust placed in him.

Tenuta Tignanello

Tenuta Tignanello lies in the heart of Chianti Classico, nestled in the rolling hills between the Greve and Pesa valleys. It encompasses 319 hectares of land, 127 of which are vineyards. Among these vineyards are two jewels: the Tignanello and Solaia vineyards. These two vineyards are situated in the same hilly area, whose soils consist of Pliocene marine marl mixed with limestone and schist, benefiting from warm days and cool nights throughout the growing season. From the grapes of these eponymous vineyards come Solaia and Tignanello, wines hailed by the international press as "two of the most influential wines in the history of Italian oenology." For the Marchesi Antinori family, they represent a constant challenge and an unwavering passion. The vineyards of Tenuta Tignanello primarily cultivate the indigenous variety Sangiovese and non-traditional varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.
