Description

Ossian 2020

Ossian 2020 represents a small group of Verdejo vineyards, home to a centuries-old winemaking tradition in the Nieva region. These vineyards, some up to 200 years old, bear witness to the uniqueness of their varietal diversity, their traditional local practices, and a nearly extinct reality. Ossian is a primitive and historic heritage. The 2020 vintage of Ossian preserves the elegance and freshness of a unique Verdejo from the pre-phylloxera era. A landscape that has preserved the historical reality of Segovian Verdejo for hundreds of years. Genetic diversity hidden in every vineyard. Surprising finesse. Length in a tranquil finish that reveals the authentic character of the Nieva environment.

An exceptional vintage

Autumn 2019 was characterized by mild temperatures and slightly above-average rainfall. January and February were unusually warm, bringing an early start to spring. The first bud break appeared in mid-March, but it didn't occur until a month later due to particularly cold mornings; it even snowed on March 31st. May was a month of mild temperatures and ample rainfall, allowing for adequate vegetative development, with flowering taking place in the first week of June. The summer was hot and dry, resulting in excellent vineyard health and a start to ripening at the end of August. Harvesting began on September 8th and lasted until September 30th.

Biological diversity

The soils surrounding Nieva represent a radical departure from the rest of the landscape: the sand and gravel prevented the arrival of phylloxera, which devastated European vineyards, and allowed this area to be dotted with small vineyards boasting century-old vines. A harsh climate with icy winters and hot summers shapes the development of a somewhat different Verdejo. The vines, planted centuries ago, also preserve the genetic diversity of the various Verdejo strains that the area's ancient inhabitants planted in each vineyard. This biological richness adds a greater complexity to the interpretation of every action.

Winemaking in plots

Ossian is the result of individual winemaking from each small plot. Viticulture, adhering to organic certification standards and reviving traditional local methods, respects the character of the vines, some of which are up to 200 years old. The grapes are collected in small crates and transported to the winery. After gentle pressing, the must is transferred to vats and wooden barrels ranging in size from 228 to 600 liters. The indigenous yeasts used in spontaneous fermentation reflect the purity and complexity of these grapes in the following weeks. Ossian 2020 was blended and bottled in the summer of 2021 after approximately nine months of aging on the lees.
