Description

Quintaluna 2020

Quintaluna 2020 showcases the maximum expression and freshness of Segovian Verdejo. Originating from small villages in the north of the province of Segovia, the grapes lend the wine its varietal character. The vines grow in sandy soils, surrounded by pine forests and benefiting from an extreme climate that contributes to its unique character. It reflects a terroir steeped in centuries of winemaking history. Arenas serve as the common thread running through a winery with a forward-looking story. Vibrant Verdejo, invigorating freshness.

An exceptional vintage

Autumn 2019 was characterized by mild temperatures and somewhat higher rainfall than usual: January and February were unusually warmer, leading to an early start to spring. The first buds appeared in mid-March, but bud break was delayed by a month due to particularly cold weeks; it even snowed on March 31st. May was a month of mild temperatures and ample rainfall, allowing for adequate vegetative development, with flowering occurring in the first week of June. The summer was hot and dry, resulting in excellent vineyard health and a start to ripening at the end of August. Harvesting began on September 8th and lasted until September 30th.

Biological diversity

Quintaluna is made using grapes from a selection of parcels spread across various locations in the north of the province of Segovia: Nieva, Aldeanueva del Codonal, Aldehuela del Codonal, and Santiuste de San Juan Bautista. The wine is predominantly made from old vines dating back to before the phylloxera epidemic, blended with grapes from a younger, selected, low-yielding vineyard. The terroir profile tells a living story of viticulture, showcasing a mixture of sandy soils with a high codon content. This structure enabled these vines to resist phylloxera, a plague that brought about the end of European winemaking at the end of the 19th century.

Winemaking in plots

The harvest was done manually. After the grapes passed through the sorting table, they were destemmed and gently pressed. The must was fermented in small stainless steel tanks with native yeasts. For nine months, the wine remained in the same tanks on its lees, while other aging took place in oak casks and barrels. The wine was clarified and bottled in the summer of 2021.
